Since this is a new application, I thought there would be some interest in seeing the results of an actual site using it. I've purchased the copyright removal option, so I won't be including the URL, but I'm going to post regular updates regarding search engine results from Google, Yahoo, and MSN. I'll also post occasional tends regarding unique visitors, page views, and Alexa ranking.
A little background. This is a mature forum (over 4 years old). It ran the default IPB configuration with the exception of blocking user profiles from guests (and bots). It's running version 2.1.7, but will be upgraded to 2.2.2 soon. It has over 200K posts, but far fewer search engine results, and Google results have been slowly dropping. Currently, I'm only using communityseo to rewrite topics and forums, with the option to include the title in topic/forum link. It previously had a free mod to submit sitemaps to Google and Yahoo, I'm now using the communityseo sitemap. I installed it a week ago. Except for spider activity, I really don't expect to see many results the first few weeks. If results are good, I plan to install this application on a much larger forum. Initial baseline link results (03/28/2007): Google: 49,600 Yahoo: 86,096 MSN: 551 After one week: Google: 58,900 Yahoo: 87,459 MSN: 589 I have noticed a very large increase in the amount of Googlebot activity, and unique visitor traffic is trending slightly higher. Unless something drastic happens in the meantime, I'll probably post another update in a week. edit: only a handful of FURLs have been included in Google's index. This script should increase search engine referrals. You will need stats software to do monitor the results. Many hosting packages include free stats scripts like Awstats or Webalizer. The script also supports Google Analytics (free). You can also monitor the number of links from search engines using the site: modifier. Google example: site:communityseo.com. The same works for Yahoo! and MSN. Results 1 - 20 of about 1,120 from communityseo.com, equals the number of links Google's index currently contains for this site.
If you've purchased this script, it should be for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Increase the number of links to your site from search engines, the relevance of those links, and raise search engine result positioning (SERP). The end result should be more people arriving at your site via search engines, and increased traffic. This post has been edited by justme: Apr 5 2007, 12:47 PM |

Yes, it's amazing some of the things that can be acheived without too many drastic changes. If it were possible, there's a lot I'd prefer to change on the backend - but that would mean many more file edits and much lengthier upgrade processes and so on.
Further to what justme said, one tool I absolutely love is Google's "Webmaster Tools" It allows you to see how many pages are indexed, what position you rank in for various queries, external and internal links to pages, ability to submit your sitemap (and see how many urls it found in your sitemap) and other cool things. It's free, and worth the time to look over. I don't look at it very often, but every few days I check it out to make sure Google's not seeing error pages (i.e. 404's and such), and to see how we are positioning for various keywords. I'm very interested in seeing your results justme - you seem to have a good grasp on how SEO works (even if we disagree on some points) and you know how to track the data that is pertinent, so please do keep us updated. |

ETA - just because this will be a very interesting thread to follow, I'm going to pin it for now. We may decide to do more with this later (a full, guest viewable case-studies forum, or perhaps if the owner wishes, highlight this on our main site, etc.).

A small disclaimer, Google warns that site: results can be inaccurate, and may vary. This is especially true as queries can hit different data centers, and some will have fresher data. Google may even change the algorithm. However, in the absence of a major Google update, it's a good tool for identifying trends.
I'm most interested in Google, because it's where I get the majority of my referrals. About 5 to 1 over Yahoo, and 20 to 1 over MSN (Live). I said I'd post an update if something drastic happens. Adding 10,000+ pages to Google's index in one day seems pretty drastic! Google Results 1 - 20 of about 69,700 Unfortunately, without the communityseo text in the footer, I don't have a real accurate way to determine how many pages are indexed with the new URLs. I have added some unique text, so I can better filter URL results in the future. I'll continue to post daily if I see major movement. |

edited: I got too far off-topic. This is supposed to be a results thread.
My results are going to be skewed for a little while. I messed up a path in my robots.txt file that lead to some links being indexed that I didn't want indexed. It was fixed on Friday, and is likely to reduce the search engine index results for a while. Regarding the sitemap. When I checked this AM, it had only populated topic URLs through November of 2005 (about 25% done). However, in the past few days, I've seen daily Googlebot hits in excess of 40,000. That's about 10X previous levels. It seems to be doing okay without a complete sitemap. As I suspected, the results are down a little at each search engine: Google: 64,500 Yahoo: 86,716 MSN: 569 This post has been edited by justme: Apr 8 2007, 11:54 PM |

Not a lot of movement in the number of links this week:
Google: 56,100 Yahoo: 87,036 MSN: 810 Bots are still very active on the site. I think the drop in Google is due to my recent robots.txt changes. I'm still expecting these numbers to make a big jump. I am seeing some movement where it really counts. There was a dip in traffic after first installing the mod, but it's picked up very nicely in the last few days:
traffic.png ( 1.83K )
Number of downloads: 118Yellow bar is unique visitors, dark blue is page views. Adsense is unavailable at the moment, but revenue is up as well. This post has been edited by justme: Apr 14 2007, 01:35 PM |

Google: 70,500
Yahoo!: 87,415 MSN: 1,159 Traffic has maintained, and continued to increase:
traffic.png ( 2.14K )
Number of downloads: 128However, I think we've just started to scratch the surface. The new FURLs aren't showing up in the top URL referral logs yet, and only 100-200 per day are being added to Google's index. Hopefully, future enhancements to the sitemap will produce faster results on large sites. Even at the current rate, this mod will pay for itself in about a month. |
