Google's Adsense does a pretty decent job of delivering relevant results, but too often the advertising is not at all related to the topic, or even the forum being viewed. I was able to increase my click through rate by using the targeting feature, and focusing the Adsense bots on the content. You should see an increase in the click through rate, and the ecpm through higher smart pricing. Let me know you're results if you give it a try!

In the ACP, make the following edits on the default skin your bots use. If you have Google ad section targeting already in your skin (i.e. Header & Footer Wrapper <% BOARD %>) you should remove it first.

ACP -> Look & Feel (tab) -> Skin Manager -> Edit template HTML...

Topic View, RenderRow

Find:
CODE
{$post['post']}
                {$post['edit_by']}

Replace with:
CODE
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->
                {$post['post']}
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
                {$post['edit_by']}

Topic View, topic_page_top
Find:
CODE
<td width='99%' style='word-wrap:break-word;'><div><{CAT_IMG}> <b>{$data['TOPIC']['title']}</b>{$data['TOPIC']['description']}</div></td>

Replace with:
CODE
<td width='99%' style='word-wrap:break-word;'><div><{CAT_IMG}> <b><!-- google_ad_section_start -->{$data['TOPIC']['title']}</b>{$data['TOPIC']['description']}<!-- google_ad_section_end --></div></td>

Optional, to increase the relevance for the forum index view (one level below the board index), edit the following...
Forum Index, PageTop
Find:
CODE
<td width='99%'><div><{CAT_IMG}> {$data['name']}</div></td>

Replace:
CODE
<td width='99%'><div><{CAT_IMG}> <!-- google_ad_section_start -->{$data['name']}<!-- google_ad_section_end --></div></td>

Forum Index, render_forum_row
Find:
CODE
<div>
            {$data['go_new_post']}{$data['prefix']} {$data['attach_img']}<span id='tid-span-{$data['tid']}'><a id="tid-link-{$data['tid']}" href="{$this->ipsclass->base_url}showtopic={$data['tid']}" title="{$this->ipsclass->lang['topic_started_on']} {$data['start_date']}">{$data['title']}</a></span> {$data['PAGES']}
            <div class="desc"><span onclick='return span_desc_to_input("{$data['tid']}");' id='tid-desc-{$data['tid']}'>{$data['description']}</span></div></div>

Replace with:
CODE
<!-- google_ad_section_start --> <div>
            {$data['go_new_post']}{$data['prefix']} {$data['attach_img']}<span id='tid-span-{$data['tid']}'><a id="tid-link-{$data['tid']}" href="{$this->ipsclass->base_url}showtopic={$data['tid']}" title="{$this->ipsclass->lang['topic_started_on']} {$data['start_date']}"> {$data['title']}</a></span> {$data['PAGES']}
            <div class="desc"><span onclick='return span_desc_to_input("{$data['tid']}");' id='tid-desc-{$data['tid']}'>{$data
['description']} </span></div></div><!-- google_ad_section_end -->

edit: (fixed bug when using click and hold to edit option)

Since this is a new application, I thought there would be some interest in seeing the results of an actual site using it. I've purchased the copyright removal option, so I won't be including the URL, but I'm going to post regular updates regarding search engine results from Google, Yahoo, and MSN. I'll also post occasional tends regarding unique visitors, page views, and Alexa ranking.

A little background. This is a mature forum (over 4 years old). It ran the default IPB configuration with the exception of blocking user profiles from guests (and bots). It's running version 2.1.7, but will be upgraded to 2.2.2 soon. It has over 200K posts, but far fewer search engine results, and Google results have been slowly dropping. Currently, I'm only using communityseo to rewrite topics and forums, with the option to include the title in topic/forum link. It previously had a free mod to submit sitemaps to Google and Yahoo, I'm now using the communityseo sitemap.

I installed it a week ago. Except for spider activity, I really don't expect to see many results the first few weeks. If results are good, I plan to install this application on a much larger forum.

Initial baseline link results (03/28/2007):
Google: 49,600
Yahoo: 86,096
MSN: 551

After one week:
Google: 58,900
Yahoo: 87,459
MSN: 589

I have noticed a very large increase in the amount of Googlebot activity, and unique visitor traffic is trending slightly higher.

Unless something drastic happens in the meantime, I'll probably post another update in a week.

edit: only a handful of FURLs have been included in Google's index.

Why not offer a 90-day money back guarantee? You have a new, unproven product, and I would guess many people are on the fence, waiting for others to be the guinea pigs. A 90-day guarantee would show you have faith and confidence in the ability of this program to increase search engine referrals, and increase revenue.

If after 90-days the purchaser doesn't feel they've gotten their money's worth, they can uninstall the program, and request a refund. You deactivate the license, and refund the purchase price. Unless time is spent on support, it really costs nothing, and potentially greatly increases the installed userbase. After you get a decent base of sites using the software, and some success stories, then you can reconsider if it's needed.

As someone in the market, here's my initial impressions on CommunitySEO.

What I like about it:
  • Nice looking URLs. Ability to remove duplicate and stop words.
  • Seems most URLs have been converted (see below)
  • Redirects old links (index.php?showtopic=) to FURLs.
  • Similar topics is nice, I agree it's a useful SEO feature.
  • Sitemap generator, very nice (support for more than 50K topics?)
  • It's available now.
What I don't like:
  • Spider Skin (cloaking?)
  • Some of the URLs are not very friendly, ...html&view=new, ...lofiversion/index.php?f1.html
  • If you click on a post number while viewing a topic, it's not converted:
  • ...index.php?s=&showtopic=XXXX&view=findpost&p=XXXXX, html&pid=XXXX&st=XXX&#entryXXXX
  • Topic IDs in RSS feeds are not rewritten.
  • Not all special characters are stripped: 24and9835King-Siddand9834and9829and9830-m2371.html
  • Golbal/per forum meta tags. IMO, they need to be dynamic. The description should pull the first 200-255 characters from the post content, and the keywords be a comination of the title, broken apart with commas, and a few per forum globals.
Questions:
  • Looks like it can, but just confirming, the ability to modify the FURL? i.e. Use underscores instead of dashes?
  • Does your mod_rewrite break .htaccess redirects?
  • From above, does the sitemap generator support more than 50,000 topics?
  • Is it possible to permalink to an individual post?
    (index.php?s=&showtopic=XXXX&view=findpost&p=XXX XX, html&pid=XXXX&st=XXX&#entryXXXX)
  • Is there an option for copyright removal?
  • Any success stories?
  • Why don't you use it on your own forums?
